Times Square 2050 Painting

$1,500.00

48 × 36" (big!)

Oil and acrylic on canvas.

Illustrated is a fictional dystopian scene of Times Square, New York City enshrouded in oil and rubble, yet holding a glimmer of hope. Two main figures anchor the scene. This piece comments on climate change, the economy, and current culture.

Peeking from between the iconic Times Square advertisement screens are vines of greenery, hinting towards a possible green-forward future. One of the screens advertises a delay in the Earth’s global warming to 2°C above pre-industrial levels, as many experts have warned will happen by 2050 if the global North continues living in denial and greed. The biggest screen advertises a futuristic “AI maid” named Emma to show society’s reliance on women’s invisible labor and its insistence on undermining it. Surrounding visuals/designs on screen allude to a provocative tone, as many women are unwilling framed in our society.

The two main figures are drawn directly from Marina Abramović’s performance piece Rest Energy. In this painting, the woman represents a common good person. The man represents a growing amount of people who abandon their morals in favor of their career. He is depicted with a water bottle, symbolically stealing humanity’s right to clean water, on behalf of his employers. The arrow is pointed towards the common good person to show how in the pursuit of moral good, many fellow humans will knowingly uphold harm.
